Technical problem update, 1/22/01:

New posts will begin coming through in the order they had been posted.

This board had experienced technical problems beginning in early November. It seems the problems have been MOSTLY fixed. Previously, messages posted by one person would appear with another poster's name and email address, or approved messages would disappear after approval.

As a result of hard work by Insidetheweb, this fix has made it possible to recommence posting approved messages. The backlog of over 200 messages is slowly being approved and put through. This is a painstaking process, because each message is being copied and saved elsewhere in the event the system here loses it. In today's test, out of 27 messages approved, one was lost, but has been restored because of this tedious copying.

You are welcome to use the post form at the bottom, but your post will not show up immediately- the backlog of posts will come first in date order, and soon the board should be current with your message.

Again, sincere apologies for the inconvenience, please keep checking back to view new posts as they come through, as they will, on a daily basis. Thanks for hanging with us while this problem was resolved. We hope to have the all the messages up soon.

Searcher? Hi and welcome!
Spammer? Bye-bye!

YOUR POST WILL NOT APPEAR IMMEDIATELY after posting because this board is now moderated, meaning posts get approved and will then show up. If you have a real search post relating to PA, it'll be here soon! If you were planning on spamming this board to promote your product, chain letter, group, or service, don't bother.

Posts will be approved no less frequently than every other day, and probably more often than that. There has been a big increase in the number of people trying to use this board for their own selfish purposes that are for profit or not related to Pennsylvania searches. Their junk takes up space and makes it harder for you to search, and I am sorry this has been happening. Genuine search posts only will be here from now on, so you won't have to wade through the trash, and I won't be forever removing it. Thanks for understanding!

There's a lot out there now for searching birthparents and adoptees- sometimes it's a bit overwhelming. This message board is intended for use by people over 18 who have lost touch with each other through adoption proceedings in PENNSYLVANIA.

To learn HOW TO SEARCH IN PA, go to (and bookmark)
Pennsylvania Adoption Search Menu.

If you would like, you can join a free PA EMAIL SEARCH AND SUPPORT GROUP called
PAFind.

THIS BOARD IS FOR THE POSTING OF PERSONAL SEARCH INFORMATION ONLY!
By using this board you understand your search info may be sent on to search and support group to increase your chance of a match. Any information not specifically relating to Pennsylvania is not posted by the moderator.

Please note THE BOARD HAS MANY PAGES- when done searching this one, go to the bottom and select the other pages too!

______________________________

PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE POSTING. The fact you are using this board means it would be smart to know how to present your info well and be aware of some Pennsylvania adoption issues.
Thanks!

FILLING OUT THE FORM FOR BEST RESULTS:

When you fill out the form, make sure you list the essentials (DATE OF BIRTH, PLACE, WHO YOU ARE) of your search in the first box for "Message Subject", not just in the text, and try to avoid vague subjects like "Searching". We suggest this format:

"B-father ISO b-dau Lehigh County 4/29/66"
or
"F adoptee ISO any b-family Cambria County 12/5/75"
or
"B-sis ISO b-sis Bethlehem 7/10/69."

This way those seeking you won't have to read through posts that do not apply to find your message. Also, if this board ever gets so big that it has to be switched to a format where only Message Subject fields are viewable until you click on them, your search info will still be visible on first glance from the first page. As with any registry that has viewable contact info, when you post you should be aware there are some folks who may solicit you via snail or e-mail. The Adoption Message Board of Pennsylvania and the site maintainers assume no responsibility, and do not endorse these agents or their activity in any way. Consider any email solicitation carefully and use your "delete" option where you choose.

If you want to respond to a message with a regular public post, click on "reply" and fill in the boxes. If you want to respond to someone privately, click on "reply" and then click on the original poster's e-mail link. IF YOU FIND A MATCH, please respond to that person privately. Then please send a quick e-mail to the management by clicking here so the fruits of labor can be rewarded. It would be great to know the board helped. Thanks! We'd like to note you have been reunited to inspire or educate others still looking. If you "find" another way, please also let us know, and how you did it.

MESSAGES POSTED WILL REMAIN POSTED FOR ONE YEAR. SEND OR WRITE YOURSELF A REMINDER NOW TO REFRESH YOUR LISTING IN CASE YOU ARE STILL SEARCHING THEN.

In addition to this board, TAKE YOUR BEST SHOTS WITH THESE REGISTRIES:

1. The International Soundex Reunion Registry is the largest, oldest, and most successful reunion registry in the world. It is FREE and run by volunteers. It is not maintained on the web. To get a registration form, send a self-addressed stamped envelope to: ISRR, P.O. Box 2312, Carson City, NV, 89702-2312.

2. The Pennsylvania Adoption Reunion Registry is a big, FREE, volunteer-maintained, mutual consent registry serving PA triad members. This registry is for you if you were adopted in PA, terminated parental rights in PA, or adopted a child in PA. For info on how to get a form, e-mail your request by clicking on this mail link.

3. The state of Pennsylvania offers two registries, neither of which are highly successful, and which are apparently not funded for any promotion. No one seems to know they exist. Still, they are all the state offers, so you should try these official vehicles. One is from the BUREAU OF VITAL STATISTICS. You can only register if you are a b-parent. If you are an adoptee, you can only ask if your b-parents registered and it costs four bucks every time you ask. Just because you asked once does not mean you will be alerted when your b-parents register- you will not be told. The onus is on you to keep checking back in case your b-parents filed in the meantime. Take the shot. Call the Bureau for instructions on inquiries and filing the forms at (724) 656-3100.

The other registry PA has is a HEALTH REGISTRY. It's not for reunion- it's to pass on medical history to adoptees. This is another great concept that doesn't seem to be working because nobody knows about it. It's a voluntary registry that allows adoptees the luxury of their health histories IF their b-parents heard of it and if they are motivated enough to follow through by reporting health issues to it. If you want to get information on the health registry, call 1-800-227-0225 or write to: Hillcrest, 2nd Floor, P.O. Box 2675, Harrisburg, PA 17105.

4. The Pittsburgh Adoption Connection maintains a STATEWIDE registry of over 3000 searching registrants. To receive a form, e-mail Glenda Shay.

5. You should sign up with the Adoptee Search Center. You can visit their site here. The registrant contact information is maintained offline, but you can register online right now.

6. Adoption Forum also maintains a registry, mostly PA, but some from the tri-state area. To use it you will fill out their membership form, but you do not have to join- however, joining will bring the value of being part of a large and noticeable consumer group and there is validity in that! Regardless, if you go here, you can get a form to mail or fax in- address and fax number are at the top.

7. One of the biggest registries on the web is the World Wide Registry. They send their registrant info to many places so it's good exposure for your search.

8. If you want two pages that have other registries on the web to try, go here and here.

9. Some PA adoptions crossed borders. If you think you may have been involved in such a birth, you should check out The Western PA, Eastern OH, Northern WV Message Board. Or, if Delaware was involved, check out this page of info and a registry. Another spot to get started on NJ, DE search is here.

10. You can't post, but another list of searches to check is located here.

While you're here- did you know that Pennsylvania is considering a law that will make it a FELONY to search for your biological family member? If this law is passed, it will also require a birthmother to make her relinquishment decision final within 8 days of birth. A birthfather has to prove he has an interest in a child to stop adoption proceedings, but that interest is not defined. Nationwide, this law is known as the UAA or Uniform Adoption Act.

Here in Pennsylvania we have O'Pake (Berks County) and Krebs (Lebanon County) to thank for introducing the UAA here last term, and Krebs is doing it again this term in House Bill 654. All across the country, birthparents recognize that a closed records system makes their offspring second class citizens, not entitled to their own birth certificates, let alone their ethnic and health histories. Adoptees recognize they not only may never know completely who they are, but they never get to say "thank you" when it is deserved. How would YOU feel if people around you including the government, knew stuff about you but wouldn't tell you? Many birthparents suffer the rest of their lives wondering if the choice they made to give up a child was a good one. Adoptees spend a chunk of their lives having to say "I don't know, I'm adopted." They face the risk of raising a family and passing along unknown problems to their innocent children because they are adopted. They go through life feeling disconnected from the tree of humanity, never seeing a person who looks, acts or thinks quite like they do. And yes, every day an adoptee somewhere becomes sick or dies because some people in power somewhere felt that it was neccessary to assume all birthparents wanted "confidentiality" that was never promised in any legal document. And these laws basically tell the adoptee "It is more important to protect someone we assume wants confidentiality than to deal with your need for your complete identity, or your right to your own birth certificate. Even if it IS your life, even if the birth event included you, you can't have it. You were a baby then, and as far as we are concerned, you are still a baby who can't appropriately handle the information." The message to searching birthparents is "Sorry! You screwed up once and now you can kiss it goodbye." By the ideology of O'Pake and Krebs, we are asked to step even further into the past than PA's archaic laws now force us to do. So much for vision. DE just opened their records and NJ is moving in the same direction. WHEN WILL PA GET A CLUE?

Senator Stewart Greenleaf, however, DOES have a clue. Last term he introduced SB 443 to open birth certificates in PA, and God-willing he will introduce a similar bill this term.. At the age of majority, adoptees would be able to receive their own darn birth certificates. Thanks, Mr. Greenleaf, for recognizing that adoptees are not children forever. There will be many, however, who will not benefit from this if the law is passed with a "disclosure veto"- which would potentially allow a birthparent to DENY their biological children their own birth certificate. Please support Senator Greenleaf in Montgomery County, and write to him regardless of where you live now. Let him know how you feel about the disclosure veto.

You should write to as many state legislators as possible, in both the House and the Senate, since the closed records bill is in both branches. You can get the snail mail address for any house or senate member from this page of state rep and senator links by name.

If you are not sure who the senator is for your area or if you are from out of state and don't know who covers your old turf, go to a clickable senator locator. To get the reps for your county area go to this representative locator.

______________________________

If you want to read the bill for continuing closed records and new penalties for searching in PA, it can be requested thru your legislator's offices (which gives you another chance to register your opinion). They are also available FREE for your reading pleasure by calling the House and Senate Document Rooms.

House - 717-787-2372 ask for House Bill 654 (closed records)
Senate - 717-787-7163 no Senate bill on records legislation has yet been introduced this term.

______________________________

When the legislators get constituent e-mail, they take it a little less seriously than hard copy- and it gets no consideration if it contains no name and physical address. Don't get lazy- do the email but print out and mail the hard copy too.

Don't worry if you are now out of state- these laws will impact your search so you should speak up.

Mr. Wozniak, Dem. from Cambria County withdrew his support of the closed records bills. Jack Wagner, is an adoptive father. Larry Sather is the man who introduced the Health Registry- because his son married an adopted woman and his grandchild had health trouble.

THANKS FOR RECOGNIZING THAT YOU HAVE TO GO BEYOND YOUR PERSONAL SEARCH, AND GET TO THE ROOT OF THE REASON WHY YOU HAVE TO SEARCH AT ALL - THE LAW.

    209.240.221.56 writes:

You were born on 12/27/69 but weren't adopted till the early part of 1970. Lawyer's name was Raymond Rubens.

I want you to know I ALWAYS think about you. I was 17 at the time of your birth. I was told not to be selfish and to give you to parents who can care for you right who will love you and make you safe. This is something I never had. My father lived 10 min. away from me and never once cared if I had food or clothes on my back and would have set our home on fire to collect insurance with me in it. If it wasn't for a friend I wouldn't be here now. My mother worked three jobs to keep us together and was never home so welfare stepped in and took us away. I never wanted you to live like this, so I thought it was best to give you the live you deserved -two parents who will love you care for you so you will feel safe. I did this out of love. I carried you, felt your every move, heard you heart beat, loved you from the start and will love you forever.

I love you, son, with all my heart and pray to GOD that someday you will want to find me so I can hold you one more time. Always know you're in my thoughts and heart forever. If you ever want me I'm here forever. GOD BE WITH YOU FOREVER.

I am seeking any information on Raymond Frye born around 1906...probably in New Castle,PA Lawrence County where both his parents continued to reside. They divorced in 1910. His parents were: Wallace Merle FRYE and Mary M. HAMMOND.
We do not know for certain if he was adopted or in a foster home/orphaned. His parents did not raise him. He visited his mother when he was grown but his father was deceased at that time-1930s & early 1940s. He married and was last known to have resided somewhere near/in Pittsburgh area. I have searched for many years and still come up empty on the correct Raymond Frye... there are many out there. Maybe someone that knows more specific research resources would know. Any help appreciated on finding more on him and his descendants. Thank you.

Looking for anybody that can claim me. Would like to meet my birth family. I am starting to get so sad on having no luck. The attorney that handled my case was Fremont McKenrick. I hired a private investigator and he pulled some information through hospital records. Once I pursued this information, the family told me that there was no way that we had the right parents, because they couldn't have children. But why did hospital records pull her name? Sarah Rogers? Fathers name, Raymond Ohala. I have alot of information on those 2 people, but somehow have to prove if these are the right ones. Family claims maybe another Sarah Rogers. I just don't know. I need anyone's help. Thank you and I greatly appreciate it. sarah now lives in ca.ifornia and raymond in deceased. sarah is remarried. sarah and raymond adopted a daughter in 1980. her name is amy ohala.

Do I have siblings? Who are my parents? Are they still alive? These are all questions running around in my mind, can you help me find out some much needed answers? Thanks.......
